I don’t know what it is about bifurcated packaging that we’re so drawn to.
Maybe there’s something about duality in containers that we just identify with as people. A left-brain/right brain thing? I’m thinking back to the Nerds candy box and similar divided boxes. (See also: Nerds Cereal)
This dual-chambered bottle design for Bristol-Meyers’ Tandem Shampoo, was patented in 1961 by industrial designer, Walter T. Heintze.
A patent for its “Dispensing Closure” cap was obtained in 1963 by Ralph H. Thomas.
A commercial for Tandem shampoo is below. (Music by Wade Denning.)
But this is only half of our “Tandem Shampoo” content. (See what we have in the other half of this post, after the fold…)
Who’ll get Bristol-Myers’ Plum?
What ad agency will be added to the Bristol-Myers Co. products division’s agency lineup to replace BBDO?
Trade sources report that seven agencies have already been interviewed: J. Walter Thompson; Grant Advertising; Sullivan, Staufier, Colwell & Bayles; D’Arcy Advertising; Grey Advertising; Norman, Craig & Kummel; and Benton & Bowles.
Only last three agencies named above are supposedly still in the running to pick up the B-M products (Trig deodorant, Trushay hand lotion and Tandem shampoo) recently resigned by BBDO. As the three products’ total billing was only $250,000, it is thought that when B-M management picks its new ad agency, there will be a reshuffling of products in order to give the incoming agency several million dollars worth of business.

Our research didn’t reveal which agency ultimately landed the account, but whoever it was some of their work most likely appears below…
This 1962 ad (via: Relic Paper) offers a promotional “Tandem hair-style wheel” in exchange for 25¢ and and one of their patented “inner plastic swivel” caps.
This ad reminds us of the Doublemint Twins campaign, and draws an analogy between “tandem bicycles” and Tandem Shampoo’s bottle.
via: Amazon, ads-thru-time is selling this ad for $13.99
In this ad, celebrity Dorothy Collins offers to buy your first bottle of “new Tandem shampoo.”
Tandem Shampoo’s product tagline: “The one shampoo that’s really two.”
