In 2011, Randy wondered whether there was any practicable way that a so-called “magic folding cube” could be designed as a box to actually contain something.

The trick would be to design a structure that included tuck flaps for each of the 8 connected boxes. In the design above, I found a way of doing this by combining 4 identically shaped die cut pieces which must then be glued together.

The thing is that (unbeknownst to me at the time) there was another solution to this problem — a solution that also used 4 identically shaped die cut pieces. This design was the “interlocking box sets” published in George L. Wybenga & Lázlo Roth’s seminal book, The Packaging Designers Book of Patterns.

What’s surprising about the published “interlocking box sets” design, is that there was no mention at all made of its “magic puzzle cube” unfolding action. It was only because I had tried to design something similar, that I recognized it for it was. A better solution, in some ways, their eight boxes are not glued to each other, but are held together by interlocking flaps.
